Rumor of a 100% halal McDonald’s in France : the brand firmly denies it
The fast-food giant McDonald’s is at the center of a crazy rumor that has spread in France in recent days. Viral videos announce a radical change in the brand’s offer as early as November : 100% halal meat.
The information, massively shared on TikTok, claims that McDonald’s France is about to become "100% halal" throughout the country. A video published on October 27, claiming that an "internal document would have leaked", has been viewed and shared thousands of times. It has sparked heated debates between those who see it as a "logical advance" and others as a "dangerous business choice".
Faced with the scale of the phenomenon, the company had to react. Contacted this Wednesday, October 29 by AFP, McDonald’s France formally denied this information. The brand, which is the company’s largest market outside the United States, recalled that it "does not intend to integrate community offers within the range" in order to remain "universally accessible". A spokesperson confirmed that the "purchasing policy has not changed, contrary to unfounded rumors".
This denial specifically concerns France, as the brand already offers halal products in other countries, such as Morocco, Saudi Arabia or Turkey, a fact that may have contributed to the credibility of the rumor.
False information from specialized accounts
According to the checks carried out by AFP and TF1 Vérif, the rumor would come from a TikTok account called "france__actu". This account uses the visual codes of traditional news media to disseminate false information, although it indicates in its own biography that it publishes "strange news" with "(25% true)".
These accounts, which present themselves as media, are actually spreading disinformation in order to generate audience and revenue. They rely on quickly produced content, often using diverted images and voice-overs generated by artificial intelligence, as was the case for this video.
